Football fans could face drug tests under new police powers

Under proposed new powers, police could be authorised to conduct drug tests on fans at matches. The initiative comes in response to concerns about the role of drugs in violence and antisocial behaviour in and around stadiums.

Here’s what could happen to fans…

Arrest or Removal from the Stadium

If a fan tests positive for drugs or is found in possession of illegal substances, they could be immediately removed from the stadium and potentially arrested. This is especially likely if their behaviour is deemed disruptive or violent.

Ban from Football Matches

Offenders could face a football banning order, which prohibits them from attending matches for a set period. These bans can also include restrictions on traveling to certain areas or events where football games are taking place.

Fines or Criminal Charges

Possession of illegal drugs can lead to fines or criminal charges, depending on the quantity and type of substance. Repeat offenders or those involved in drug distribution could face more severe penalties, including potential jail time.

Impact on Employment or Travel

A drug-related offense could result in a criminal record, which may affect employment opportunities, travel visas, or other aspects of personal and professional life.

Mandatory Rehabilitation or Education Programs

In some cases, offenders might be required to attend drug education or rehabilitation programs as an alternative to harsher penalties, particularly for first-time offenders or those with minor involvement.
